THE ALFRED APFEL and ROBERT MINUCCIANNI SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Scholarship funds are available for tuition only for either students attending college or for coatings industry participants attending short courses.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Coatings Industry Participants – Industry participants who are currently employed in the coatings industry and who are members of the Golden Gate Society for Coatings Technology may apply for tuition for short courses or for tuition for college for continuing education.

  • College Students – Current college students or high school students about to attend college who are either student members of the Golden Gate Society for Coatings Technology or who are dependents of members of the GGSCT may apply for tuition for college.  College students who are not dependents of members must first join the GGSCT as a student member.

APPLICATION

Applicants must submit the following:

  • 1. All Applicants - Official application form with a declaration of either a vocational interest or a current occupation that is viable to the coatings industry.

  • 2. Students Entering College - official copies (no photocopies) of high school transcripts showing grades of all classes attended in all schools.

  • 3. Current College Students - In addition to Requirement 2, submit transcripts of grades for all college classes taken to date.

  • 4. All Students - A letter of 200-300 words describing past school and extracurricular activities, past work experience, and future career plans.

  • 5. Coatings Industry Participants - A letter of 100-200 words describing why they want to take the short course.

Dependent of Member Scholarship - Dependents of members may apply for scholarships for college tuition.  Dependent of Member means the applicant is claimed on the member’s tax return. The member must be a GGSCT member in good standing and be a GGSCT member for at least one year. The Dependent of Member applicant is encouraged but not required to attend GGSCT events as well.  The amounts of individual scholarships are partially dependent on the activity contribution of the member to the GGSCT and attendance by the member at GGSCT events.   All amounts given are at the discretion of the GGSCT Scholarship Committee.

Member Scholarship – GGSCT members may apply for course fees for any professional development course or any registration fees for any industry trade show attendance.  The scholarship recipient must give a report to the GGSCT of their experience in the course.  Any member scholarship must be approved in advance of the course or trade show and is not paid until the course or trade show is completed.  This means the member or the member's company must pay for the course or trade show first.   Member scholarships cover Early Bird registration fees only.

THE MARGARET "MARNIE" HARTMANN SCHOLARSHIP

The Golden Gate Society for Coatings Technology offers a student research scholarship to fund either a student enrolled at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in the Paint and Coatings program or to several students enrolled in related majors such as other sciences or engineering for a summer learning experience in polymers and coatings to see if they would like to pursue a career in the coatings industry.

In 2016 this award was renamed to the Golden Gate Society for Coatings Technology Margaret Hartmann Scholarship.

The student recipient is required to give a presentation both to the GGSCT at the September dinner meeting and at the Western Coatings Symposium during years when there is a symposium.
